  8:00AM 12:30PM Farmers Market   Live, work, play, and be healthy! Downtown Springfield, Inc. (DSI) invites the public to attend opening day ribbon cutting and festivities for the Old Capitol Farmers’ Market, presented by St. John’s Hospital, Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m.; with live music by the Frank Trompeter Quartet, Celebrity Chef Demonstration by Ashley Meyer of Real Cuisine Restaurant & Catering, and free cake (while it lasts) made by Incredibly Delicious. The Market will be held 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturday’s May 15 – October 26 and is located on Adams Street between Fifth and Second streets. With nearly three full blocks of vendors there is an outstanding variety of produce, baked goods, meats, cheese, plants and many other specialty items. The Market accepts LINK, Debit, and Credit Card transactions for the purchase of Market Tokens ($1.00 each). The Market Token Station will be located at Development Services Group, 401 E. Adams (NE corner of Fourth and Adams) and available 8 a.m. to noon each Market day. Vendors will also continue to accept cash, checks, WIC and Senior Coupons. DSI again received grant funding from LINK UP Illinois to provide Double Value tokens for Link cardholders; LINK UP Illinois is a program of Experimental Station, in partnership with Wholesome Wave and the Illinois Farmers Market Association. LINK customers may receive a maximum of $10 of Double Value tokens per market day until grant funds are expended.
 
  12:00PM 4:00PM Home Tours   April 20 through Sept. 30, Iles House open to the public Wednesdays and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. Visitors are introduced to the history and architecture of the Iles House, Springfield’s oldest home, and provided tours of the house and the Barringer collection of early Illinois furnishings. The new Iles House exhibit: Camp Butler: A Civil War Story is featured in the downstairs Springfield Museum. The story is told through artifacts and documents, many from private collections. Curators will be on hand to talk about collections, and refreshments will be served. Donations encouraged. Visiting Artisans Program. Saturdays through Sept, the house will have blacksmith, civil war cooking, shoemaker, and more. Sixteen different crafters from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

  10:00AM 12:00PM Leaf Identification & Collection Hikes   Have you been assigned a leaf collection for school? Come to the Washington Park Botanical Garden for a fun-filled two hour hike. We will be collecting around 50 different types of leaves from trees on our grounds. Due to popular attendance we have scheduled two different Saturdays for these hikes. They are exactly the same so your student only needs to attend one of them. This is a great opportunity to get a start on those assignments! Students must call the Garden to place their name on the attendance list. This is an annual event here at the Garden. If you are looking ahead for your students please call to find out about our future hikes that will be scheduled for the 2014 school calendar year.   3:00PM 7:00PM AAUW Used Book & Other Media Sale   The American Association of University Women will hold a Used Book and Other Media Sale on Fri., Sept. 27 (Pre-Sale $5 admission) from 3-7pm and Sat., Sept. 28 (General Sale no fee) from 8:30am-1pm. Five free items will be given to teachers with a school ID. This sale, which includes an excellent selection of children’s and reference materials, will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut, Springfield.   8:00AM 11:00AM Photographing Birds Workshop   Lincoln Memorial Garden is hosting a workshop on "How to Find and Photograph Those Elusive Birds." Noted bird photographer, Jim Mordacq has been successfully chasing birds with a camera for a long time. He is going to teach a class on how to get up close and what kind of equipment works best. The workshop starts at 8 a.m. at the Ostermeier Prairie Center adjacent to the historic garden. After the initial hands-on session, the class will move to the Lincoln Memorial Garden Nature Center for classroom work including a chance to see some of Jim's remarkable photographs. They will be serving refreshments and giving tours of the historic section of the Adams House. There will be several children's nature activities and bird identification walks. A silent auction will be held that includes nature related items donated by local businesses. The Nature Boutique will have new and gently used items for sale that include books, calendars, bird watching, hiking, jewelry, scarves, and garden items. There also will be a birdwashing station available for a small donation. All money and donations collected will benefit the Springfield area bird population.   5:00PM 9:00PM Light Up Wimmer Cemetery Walk   Light Up the Wimmer Cemetery is Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at 5 p.m. and going to 9 p.m. We will have water for sale and would appreciate any donations for the walk from people who participate. There will be historical information about the cemetery and its residents, six presenters this year ranging from 1830s to the 1930s time period. Everyone will be in costumes of their era. The public is welcome and a donation of any amount would be appreciated. A wiener roast is included with the tour, please bring roasting sticks if you are participating.
