  All Day Barry Apple Festival   LaFayette Park. This annual event is one of the largest festivals in the area and celebrates everything apple in the quaint, historic town of Barry. A parade winds through the city where local music bands and a crafts show entertain visitors. Apple pies, ice cream and strudels are all specialties.   8:00AM 12:30PM Farmers Market   Live, work, play, and be healthy! Downtown Springfield, Inc. (DSI) invites the public to attend opening day ribbon cutting and festivities for the Old Capitol Farmers’ Market, presented by St. John’s Hospital, Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m.; with live music by the Frank Trompeter Quartet, Celebrity Chef Demonstration by Ashley Meyer of Real Cuisine Restaurant & Catering, and free cake (while it lasts) made by Incredibly Delicious. The Market will be held 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturday’s May 15 – October 26 and is located on Adams Street between Fifth and Second streets. With nearly three full blocks of vendors there is an outstanding variety of produce, baked goods, meats, cheese, plants and many other specialty items. The Market accepts LINK, Debit, and Credit Card transactions for the purchase of Market Tokens ($1.00 each). The Market Token Station will be located at Development Services Group, 401 E. Adams (NE corner of Fourth and Adams) and available 8 a.m. to noon each Market day. Vendors will also continue to accept cash, checks, WIC and Senior Coupons. DSI again received grant funding from LINK UP Illinois to provide Double Value tokens for Link cardholders; LINK UP Illinois is a program of Experimental Station, in partnership with Wholesome Wave and the Illinois Farmers Market Association. LINK customers may receive a maximum of $10 of Double Value tokens per market day until grant funds are expended.

  9:00AM 6:00PM The Great Pumpkin Patch   The Great Pumpkin Patch is proud to invite guests to see over 300 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds from over 30 countries around the world; all grown here on our farm. Numerous premier displays, over 5,000 hardy mums, various mazes and gardens grace the grounds. There's a diversity, of plants and animals- with several goats, pigs, exotic chickens, rabbits, a llama and an alpaca. There are several places to eat and drink on the farm and lots of entertainment on the weekends. Named Illinois Agritourism Business of the Year in 2009, The Great Pumpkin Patch is much more than an ordinary pumpkin patch. It is a safe, family-fun atmosphere where learning can take place. Located in the heart of Amish country, 2 miles south and 1/2 mile west of Arthur, they are open from Sept. 15 through Oct. 31 every day, seven days a week, from 9 am to 6 pm. Admission is charged.

  7:30AM n/a SCS Wildcat 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Fun Run   Springfield Christian School (SCS) is hosting its Third Annual 5k Run/Walk and Kid's Fun Run to be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at SCS, 2850 Cider Mill Ln. The Wildcat 5k Run/Walk will begin at 8:00 a.m.; the Kid's Fun Run for ages 3-12 will kick off at 9:10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in 17 different categories. The 5k is a timing chipped race and includes a short run through the woods on a foot trail. Participants can register online at www.getmeregistered.com through Oct. 2 (register by Sept. 23 to guarantee a t-shirt).   8:00AM n/a Abe's River Race   The inaugural Lincoln Heritage Water Trail ~ Abe’s River Race, a ACA sanctioned canoe and kayak race, will be held on Saturday, October 5 on the Sangamon River, ending at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site. Riverbank Lodge in Petersburg is the host site where canoeists and kayakers begin with registration/sign-in and return for the post-race awards and celebration. Abe’s River Race is for both competitors and those just wanting to casually paddle the river and be a part of this first of its kind event. This is the perfect, family-friendly opportunity to check out this historic waterway, as there will be monitors and safety personnel along the 6 mile course. There are five divisions of competition and awards for the top finishers in each category. Register now and through September 25 to receive an early online discount or register in person at Riverbank Lodge on October 4th and 5th. Following the race, all registered racers and paddlers should return to Riverbank Lodge to receive an Abe’s River Race t-shirt, tickets for prizes and more.
