Nine Inch Nails circa 1989 (Trent Reznor pictured far right)

Embrace the embarrassing

Trent Reznor has embraced a recent embarrassing internet video showing Nine Inch Nails lip synching to the song “Down In It.” The video surfaced on YouTube after a fan purchased a VHS Tape for $100. On the tape, the late 80s performance on the TV Show “Dance Party USA.” Reznor says on Twitter he was asked “what TV shows they'd be interested in appearing on. As a joke (and likely drunk), they thought of the most absurd choice they could come up with at the time.” The band chose “Dance Party USA” as a goof and their bluff was called. Reznor continues on Twitter “Life was good. Years later, the internet is discovered . . . there's a moral in there somewhere. Come to think of it, Skrillex may indeed owe me some publishing on that hairdo.” Watch the video and read more at Bishop's Blog.

Clown surgery

Another video that’s gonna make the rounds, but it hasn’t been released yet, is the surgery of Shawn Crahan. The Slipknot percussionist and video producer decided to film a recent knee surgery to correct an injury. Not only will he be uploading video of the knife in his knee, he’ll also release video of his wife and friends asking him strange questions as he wakes up from anesthesia.

It's treasure

On the crime beat this morning, some jerk broke into a bunch of storage units in Los Angeles and in one of them they found Alice Cooper’s treasure chest of classic Cooper archives. Stolen were several original vinyl records, a sculpture and the jacket Cooper wore in the film Wayne’s World. Cooper is asking anyone with info to use his website to pass along details.

Music News from the Rock Station, 92-7 WQLZ by Bishop Shinedown's "Amaryllis" album cover

Selling gangbusters

Shinedown is expected to have quite the showing in the first week of sales for Amaryllis. Industry experts indicate that their fourth studio attempt could sell upwards to 90,000 copies in the first week. That’s a pretty good indication that Shinedown will be around for the long haul as their staying power with fans is evident with healthy sales in the first week. Plus their latest single “Bully” is top of the charts.

New singles soon

In just a matter of weeks, we’ll have our hands on the latest single from Linkin Park called “Burn It Down”. A video should accompany the singles release as well sometime mid-April. The band recently shared with the press that their previous record may have gone to far with the use of electronica and the new album will be more down-to-earth. Expect Linkin Park’s fifth attempt sometime this summer.

Rush album update

Word on the street, (actually in the music blogs) is that Rush will soon be releasing a new single for their upcoming album Clockwork Angels. The single is said to be called “Headlong Flight” and will hit the airwaves April 19th. Rush had originally released two songs online: “Caravan” and “BU2B” reports indicate they had to re-record those because of a record label change. The band will release Clockwork Angels on May 29th via Roadrunner Records.

Soundgarden on a soundtrack

The first new song in 15 years from Soundgarden will be released on a motion picture soundtrack soon. “Live To Rise” is the title of the new song that will appear on the soundtrack for Marvel’s The Avengers. Expect to pick up the Soundgarden tune on soundtrack May 1st. Marvel’s The Avengers hits theaters May 4th.

Corgan on Jones

If you didn’t catch the hour-long chat that Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan had with liberty loving radio host Alex Jones, you’ve gotta check it out. Billy talks about his hard work coming from a lower-middle class upbringing to the successes he created for himself. He also talks about how new technology caught the music industry off guard to the point where they were for years in denial. Corgan then sheds light on his politics. Watch that very intriguing discussion online (embedded below). Corgan says his album Oceania should be coming out sometime this summer.

Next stage of treatment

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi says he has completed chemotherapy and is no ready to start three weeks worth of radiotherapy. For anyone who has battled cancer or knows someone who has battled cancer you know how grueling these treatments can be. Iommi is battling lymphoma. What’s helping him get through it? Working on a new Black Sabbath album, that’s what! We’ll keep you posted on his progress.

Global Warming Tour

Big plans for Aerosmith as the band gets ready for their “Global Warming Tour.” That’s the real name … “The Global Warming Tour.” The band will hit the road with their first show June 16th in Minneapolis. Front man Steven Tyler said that the old Aerosmith is back “with a new vengeance.” July 22nd, Aeroforce One will fly through Chicago at the United Center. There are several ticket packages available, including “Wheels Up: Steven Tyler and Joe Perry meet and greet” for $1,254.50. Opening for Aerosmith will be Illinois natives Cheap Trick.

Summerland Tour

In other tour news, there’s a strange combination taking to the road. It’s called the Summerland Tour and will feature Everclear, Sugar Ray, The Gin Blossoms, Lit, and Marcy Playground. Expect the tour to take off from Saratoga, California June 28th. The tour will snake its way to the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, August 3th.

They're done

The band that brought you tunes like “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” “Cold Hard Bitch” and “Look What You’ve Done” is no more. Jet has made the decision to pursue separate creative endeavors. They would like to thank the fans for making their story possible.

Samples online

It’s not the entire album, it’s just samples, but it’ll give you a good idea about the forthcoming Slash album Apocalyptic Love. You can stream samples of the album at Amazon. That also just happens to be the place that you can pre-order the album as well. Apocalyptic Love is due out May 22nd. Meanwhile, Slash kicked off his solo tour in Toronto on Friday and there’s a ton of video posted online.

Sold cheap, large volume

Oh, and speaking of Slash ... he most definitely appears on the Billboard Charts this week with Gun N’ Roses Greatest Hits album. That gem jumped up to No. 3 just behind a boy band and that mainstay album 21 from Adele. The GN’R Greatest Hits did beat out Bruce Springsteen’s album, though. But GN’R may have found a secret to boosting album sales. Offer it up for cheap. Google and Amazon’s MP3 store made the best of available for only 25 cents.

Loose ends

Other tid-bits ... Godsmack is said to be releasing a live album later this spring titled Live and Inspired. No word on the release date but it’s supposed to coincide with their upcoming tour with Staind beginning in mid-April.

Oh, and speaking of tours, Aerosmith's Global Warming Tour stops at United Center in Chicago, IL on June 22, 2012. Steven Tyler is going to "kick your ass and make out with your mothers." Go to www.livenation.com/aerosmith to RSVP for pre-sale tix.

Stream it before you buy it

We told you last week about the new Ministry video for “99 Percenter.” Some of the comments have been a bit negative for that song, but the band has made the entire album Relapse available online for you to stream ‘til your hearts content and if you dig heavy and fast industrial riffs then you’ll dig most of the album. Relapse hits shelves tomorrow!

New music video

The latest Korn video is circulating the web and by the time you hear this, it’s surely to have at least tens of thousands of views. Be one of the first to watch “Chaos Lives in Everything” which involves a skater punk running into a businesses man with coffee … a chase ensues, full of plenty of high speed camera work and pretty awesome slo-motion shots. The video builds with the song to where the guy in the suit is out numbered by a bunch of skater punks who spit at him and rip his jacket sleeves. But instead of being upset and opening a can, the businessman steels a skateboard and joins them rolling down the alley. Uh, nice video, Korn [sarcasm]. Watch that video embedded below:

Korn - 'Chaos Lives In Everything'

Upcoming interview

He doesn’t typically focus on music or interviewing musicians, but when alternative news radio personality Alex Jones has on the big names, you’ve gotta check it out. Sometime next week an extended and uncut interview with Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan will appear on PrisonPlanet.tv. Corgan was recently at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, where Jones hails from. Curious what Corgan is gonna talk about? Well, for a taste, Google “Billy Corgan Chemtrails” (or you can watch the preview embedded below). Corgan was unveiling details about his new album at SXSW. The full interview Jones recently did with Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine is now available online.

Future albums

In other music news, Nonpoint has finished recording their new album up in Chicago. Expect a late 2012 release date. And, Linkin Park says their next attempt will be more real as they may have gone to far with the electronic sound on A Thousand Suns, ya think?

It's not dubstep

Disturbed’s front man David Draiman is working with the former guitarist of Filter to create what he says will be tunes in the vain of other industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Draiman made the revelation when responding to a question via twitter. He was asked if it his new sound would be like dubstep and Draiman said “No, it's about as close to it as Nine Inch Nails or Ministry or Rammstein are. Industrial predates dubstep ... In other words, it is at all times a guitar-driven sound.” Draiman can work on new projects because Disturbed is on an open ended hiatus after pumping out a slew of chart topping albums and massive worldwide tours.

Concept album

Fear Factory is getting closer to releasing their concept album The Industrialist. The band’s record label, Candlelight Records, has set a June 5th release date for the attempt. Front man Burton C. Bell says the album’s story is about an automaton “that is becoming sentient as it collects more memories with each passing day. Through observation and learning, it has gained the 'will to exist.'” Bell also says that he’s got sketches to go along with the scenes developed in the progression of the album. Lookin’ forward to that one!

Won't play ceremony

It’s now clear, at least to Slash, that Guns N’ Roses will not be playing at the upcoming Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The April 14th ceremony in Cleveland will induct Guns N’ Roses, The Beastie Boys and The Red Hot Chili Peppers … just to name a few.

"The Tour"

Details are out about the KISS/Motley Crue tour simply dubbed “The Tour.” They can be that brash in naming the trek without concern that it’ll be confused with any other summertime tour because it will be the biggest tour of the summer, without a doubt. KISS will be the ultimate headliners but fans will get their fill of Motley Crue as well. The three month long tour will make its way to St. Louis at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater August 27th. Tickets go on sale this Friday with pre-sale for KISS Army fan club members having first dibs today. By the way, just so you know … KISS was in full makeup during Tuesday’s press conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in LA. Watch the press conference video embedded below:

Manson & Depp are "Vain"

We learned about the new Marilyn Manson album Born Villain set to come out May 1st and the song “No Reflection” is streaming online. Now we’re learning that Manson and longtime friend Johnny Depp collaborated on a cover of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” where Depp sang lead vocals and also played drums. Can’t wait to hear that one!

Speaking of Jons

There are pics circulating of Korn front man Jonathan Davis visiting with troops at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. The singer hung out with injured soldiers, signed autographs and even took part in a bomb disposal course where he put on a bomb suit and other things. See more pics here

Ministry can count, kinda

Industrial black sheep metalers Ministry got a new tune making the rounds online that the Occupy Wall Street crowd may want to take up as their new anthem. It may also be appropriate for teaching your toddlers how to count. The song titled “99 Percenters” is the first single from Ministry’s new album Relapse which is due out March 26th.

Summertime studio time

The first Tool album in six years could get some studio time later this year, if drummer Danny Carrey has his say. In a three-part video feature uploaded by VicFirth.com, Carrey displays his mad drumming skills while the band performed in Boston earlier this year. He also talks about the beginnings of Tool and how the band goes about writing music. Watch the videos linked here: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Mark your calendars Shinedown will be on the Jimmy Kimmel Show Monday March 26th. Check your local listings.

Big tour announcement Tuesday

Well, just when you thought things couldn't get more out of hand, along comes the tour of a lifetime. Come Tuesday we're gonna get details on a tour featuring KISS and Motley Crue. The tour is reported be kick off July 19th and could last up to three months. Surely will be an arena/amphitheater tour ... I mean, come on ... it's KISS and Motley Crue! KISS members remained zip-lipped at last week's unveiling of the mini-golf course "KISS By Monster Mini Golf." But, Crue front man Vince Neil told his ex-girfriend (who also just so happens to work for the Las Vegas Sun) that the tour was gonna be the biggest tour of the summer without a doubt. By the way Leach was the one who accused Neil of hitting her last year. Strange how you can get a scoop these days. We'll let you know where the tour will be and when. Keep it with The Rock Station, 92.7 WQLZ!

New members, not slowing down

Several bands are getting a bit of a shake up and they're not letting it slow them down. Nonpoint recently brought on three new members from the band Inn Cinema. The one-time Florida natives can no longer claim The Sunshine State as their home as they now must mix that with some members from The Land of Lincoln--the three new members are from Chicago. The windy city also happens to be where the band is recording their new album. Their seventh attempt should be out later this year. In This Moment is also enjoying a bit of a new lineup ... and no guys (and some of you ladies out there), Maria Brink has not left the band. They're working on their fourth album after departing with their drummer and guitarist (who left the band to play backing to American Idol wanker James Durbin). Expect new In This Moment sometime this year. They recently performed the new tune "Blood" at Soundwave in Australia.

Sid on the road

He’s the longtime spinster for Slipknot and for a while clubbed as DJ Starscream. Now that Sid Wilson has gone solo simply as Sid—taking on the role of vocals and producer—he’s making the rounds in interviews and headed out on the road. In less than a month Sid will be at The Castle Theater in Bloomington April 13th where he'll will bring his unique brand of tunes and crazy stage show antics alongside Killinois producer MonDope and Durt Russell of Subsequent Vibes. It’s not necessarily a rock show, but surely you’ll get the outcast-rock vibes from the event. Sid’s album is out now titled Sid.

Interview posted soon

The long-form interview with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine was broadcast online last night via Infowars Nightly News … Did anyone catch it? As with most productions from Alex Jones, the video will be leaked online. Watch the YouTube Channel TheAlexJonesChannel for the upload.

Ribbon cut

It’s finally open! KISS has cut the ribbon on their miniature golf experience in Las Vegas. Well they didn’t really cut the ribbon ... they slashed it with a sword. And they didn’t get the red carpet treatment as the carpet was the deepest color black you can find on planet earth. Video of the grand opening is available online (watch below).

Laying down some riffs

It’s like two long-lost friends getting back together for a barbecue, but this time the barbecue will be a studio and the friends will be former members of Guns N’ Roses. Slash posted a message on his Twitter account that he was getting together with former GN’R drummer Steven Adler to lay down some guitar riffs for Adler’s new album. Back in 2010 Adler performed on Slash’s album, so it’s a bit quid pro quo.

Uncertain induction

Meanwhile, Slash tells the Associated Press he’s not sure what the plan is for the upcoming appearance of Guns N’ Roses at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony next month. There were rumors that the band would play, but that is still uncertain. Adler and Slash will be alongside Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, and Axl Rose. A few later members of the band will also be inducted.

On the road

Five Finger Death Punch is on the road … in the Middle East ... and there’s video evidence! (Follow link for series of videos) Earlier this month, the Las Vegas natives visited with and performed for troops during a stop in Kuwait. This isn’t the first time the band has visited troops in that war-torn part of the world. Front man Ivan Moody says that traveling that far to play for the troops is the least thing they could do, given the sacrifice of so many service members. Five Finger Death Punch hits the road for a US/Canada tour March 23rd.

Not a mosh pit

We’ve seen this type of thing before ... a rock star stopping a show mid song to break up a fight between fans. During a show in Manchester, New Hampshire, Van Halen’s David Lee Roth stopped the band right at the beginning of their cover of the tune “Pretty Woman” to berate some members of the audience who decided to throw fists rather than rock horns. Watch the video below:

This really is how you can dicern a rock show from a metal show. At a metal show, people thrashing around looks a lot like fighting and if you don’t wanna be in the pit then get out! But at a Van Halen show thrashing around looks like fighting. Recently Dave Grohl stopped a Foo Fighters show when a member of the audience decided to start throwing fisticuffs.

New band, new album

The band is called Adrenaline Mob and it’s the new project of former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and Disturbed bassist John Moyer. Portnoy left Dream Theater to tour and record with Avenged Sevenfold and after AX7 let him go Dream Theater said they had moved on. Moyer needed something to do with his time after Disturbed announced they were taking an indefinite hiatus. The band’s debut album Omertá is out now.

Cars and guitars If you like Slash and you like cars then you’ve gotta check out the video clip of the legendary guitarist on the show “Top Gear.” Slash appears in the show where three punchy British blokes go around and show off their snobbery about a slew of different automobiles. You can catch Slash in Season 18, Episode 7. Slash also has his own six-part series with BBC Radio Two which Slash himself described as being full of music that influenced him directly. That program is set to be released sometime in April.

Single out today With the first single making its way through the internet, we’re inching closer to the new Marilyn Manson album Born Villain. You can find the track “No Reflection” online and quite frankly it’s gonna get your blood boiling with anticipation. The tune, "No Reflection" is available through iTunes today. Born Villain will hit stores on May day this year! Manson says he had to remove himself from his lifestyle in order to start fresh and that the new album sounds a lot like the first album in that it’s not afraid to do anything. Born Villain will be released on Cooking Vinyl and Manson’s label Hell, Etc. Manson will be taking to the road April 27th.

Forthcoming book If you’re a drummer and a fan of both Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Slipknot’s Shawn “Clown” Crahan then there’s a book coming out this summer that you’ll need to pick up. Apocalyptic Nightmare Journey penned by Clown is a collection of thoughts that go into the darkness and into the light … whatever the hell that means. Clown is quite the talented guy as he’s not only the director of several Slipknot film projects, including the live DVD Disasterpieces, he is also the producer of some pretty hardcore bands like Mudvayne and has remixed tunes from Marilyn Manson … so you could imagine the book being very compelling. What makes the book even more attractive is the foreword was written by Lars from Metallica where he tells you to throw yourself “into Clown’s world … into the whole f**king thing.” The book comes out in June.

In-depth interview Megadeth’s front man Dave Mustaine has made it into the conspiracy theory world, but that’s not much of a stretch as his new album Th1rt3en talks about the New World Order. Mustaine appears in an interview with Alex Jones who is a leading figure in alternative media that talks about 9/11 truth and world government eugenics. During the interview, Mustaine tells Jones about his politics and about his music. The full interview will be posted March 15th. There’s a two minute preview floating around online.

Don't wanna talk about politics? Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine may surprise you with his conservative politics and with his Christian beliefs, but he wears both of those things on his sleeves proudly, regardless of his music being framed as devil worship tripe by conservative evangelicals. Recently the news was that Mustaine had gotten into the political game by endorsing GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum but this isn’t the case, according to Mustaine. On his twitter account earlier this week he said “Contrary to how some people have interpreted my words, I have not endorsed any presidential candidate.” Mustaine’s most recent album with Megadeth, Th1rt3en out now.

Is it fair use? In other music/political news, GOP Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich is asking a judge in Chicago to throw out a case where the former Speaker of the House is being sued for using the song “Eye of the Tiger” at campaign rallies. The lawsuit was filed by Frank Sullivan, who co-wrote the song. He says that Gingrich has used the songs since 2009 but Gingrich says that his use is considered fair use. It’s not the first time that musicians have been upset that politicians use their tunes during campaign rallies. Another recent example is Tom Petty picking on Michelle Bachman for using the tune “American Girl.” Back in 2008, Sarah Palin was taken to task for using the song “Barracuda.” I guess there wasn’t a song called “Cougar.” Catch the Music Minute every weekday with the Free Beer and Hot Wings Show on 92-7 WQLZ, the Rock Station

They're working on it

How does a world renowned rock group that has a massively impressive catalog (except for that whole Lulu thing) go about making a new album? Metallica’s Lars tells Spin that he and the band are currently going through and picking a bunch of riffs to use for new songs. He also says that the band is free and clear of their record contract so they can pretty much do what they want. “The world’s our oyster,” Lars said. On the process Metallica goes through when writing albums, Lars said “We’ll develop, like, 10 ideas and do a couple cycles. We’ll do a verse, chorus and maybe an intro, and then we’ll leave them and go develop 10 other ideas. So it’s a little early yet because we haven’t gone back yet and started tweaking anything. Right now we’re throwing ideas at the canvas and picking out great riffs.”

Forthcoming book

There’s a new book coming out about Kurt Cobain’s death, but will it be worth reading? Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson expects to release the book April 8th titled Letters to Kurt. He says that Courtney Love wasn’t aware of his writing the book but now that The New York Times has the details, she sure to know now. Erlandson says that some of the book could be misconstrued … which is his way of saying the book may drum up some controversy because controversy sells books.
