Cease and desist letter

A funny thing happened at an art exhibit in L.A. titled “Once Upon A Time … Axl Rose Was My Neighbor” … a cease and desist letter was sent to the exhibit from Guns ‘N Roses front man Axl Rose. It’s being reported that the art show, put on by Laura London, features a ton of photos and one of them shows a garage door with a long string of words spray painted on it. Those words: “Slut....Sweet Child O'Die you R 1 of many nothing special.” London claims this is the garage door of Axl’s ex wife and that Axl had done it during a dispute. Rose denies it and is asking for a public apology. Dude, get over it. It’s art! Geeze.

New song streaming

Soundgarden is getting geared up for the release of their first album in 16 years. They’ve released the tune “Been Away Too Long” streaming online. Last month the band released a 37-second clip of the tune “Worse Dreams.” That clip featured some candid in-studio and on stage footage. The album King Animal is due out November 13th.  Stream the song below or follow this link.

New video out Monday

Speaking of new music … we’ve got until Monday to hear and see the new tune and video from Nonpoint. They’ve announced that Monday the world wide web will play host to their video for the song “Left For You.” The Self titled album is due out October 8th and Nonpoint will be in Springfield with Taproot at The Boondocks October 6th! Be sure to get that on your calendar. Maybe they’ll have advanced copies of the album there for sale!

Davis Bows Out, Shaddix Channels Problems Into New Album & ICP Sues FBI

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Davis bows out

If you’re planning on seeing J Devil out on the Twins of Evil Tour, you may want to scratch that off your bucket list. J Devil, that’s Korn’s Jonathan Davis’ DJ name, says he’s taking himself off the tour with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson because … well, he’s says he’s exhausted, quite frankly. A doctor has told Davis to take the next few weeks off. Slipknot’s DJ Sid will take J Devil’s place on the tour. They’ll be in St. Louis October 5th.

Shaddix channels problems into new album

Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix is sharing some of his darker moments of life. He says he was partying too much and that led to several serious issues, including lack of respect from his younger brother and serious problems with his marriage. The singer tells the press that his younger brother strait up told him that he was no longer his role model because of his drug use. He then quit after that and that effed up his marriage which in turn made him suicidal. Naturally the band stepped in and saved him. All these challenges were channeled into the new album The Connection which is due out next week.

ICP sues FBI

And, the Insane Clown Posse has made good on their threat to sue the FBI! A couple months ago at their annual “Gathering” music festival, Vilent J and Shaggy 2 Dope told their fans that they were going to sue the FBI for profiling their fans, also known as Juggalos, as violent gang members. The suit was filed in Flint Michigan.

Making News for the Wrong Reasons, Armstrong in Rehab

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Making headlines for the wrong reasons?

I’m back! And so is Green Day, back in the music news. Their album ¡Uno! dropped in store yesterday and I’m sure it’s being well received but the band is making headlines for some other reasons this week … Reasons that could lead some people to think they’re in a bit over their head. But isn’t that what makes the spectacle so much more enjoyable? It’s like we’re all waiting for the other shoe to drop! Here’s the deal—at this past weekend’s IHeartRadio festival, which features a ton of acts ranging from rock to hip hop, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong lost his cool and snapped on organizers who were giving him the 1 minute left mark.  Watch that very entertaining rant below or follow this link.

He then proceeded to smash his guitar like a good punk rocker and threw up a middle finger salute and said there’s your one minute. By the way, Justin Bieber says he’s not mad at Green Day for “making fun” of him … so it’s a safe bet that Bieber won’t get mad at me calling him a douche.

Armstrong in rehab

Anyways! That outburst from Armstrong seems to have prompted another Green Day headline … Armstrong checks into rehab. The story goes that Armstrong was sober for a full year until this past weekend when we got to see the craziness on stage. He’s undergoing treatment for substance abuse, apparently for alcohol. To each his own and best of luck to Billie.

Lee taking a break

Evanescence will be taking a break after their current tour. Front woman Amy Lee says she needs to take a breather to get her head right. She knows the critics out there say long breaks can be a bad thing. She disagrees. She says she will make another Evanescence album, it’s just a question of when. There’s no indication as to how long of a break she’ll take, but we’ll keep you posted.

New behind-the-scenes video

Papa Roach are providing fans with an behind-the-scenes look at the turmoil of making their new album The Connection. In the first video, which features the new tune “Before I Die,” front man Jacoby Shaddix is pictured in the hospital after his recent cancellation from the Uproar festival. He had to have surgery on his vocal nodes. Shaddix and the band talk about the meaning of The Connection. Expected release of the album is unknown.  Watch the video below or follow this link.

Deftones has a new single available to download for free online! Follow this link to download the tune "Leathers."  The band will release a new album November 13th titled Koi No Yokan.  Currently the band is out on tour with Scars on Broadway and will be in Chicacgo October 23rd.

Top ten list

It’s no surprise that Metallica’s Master of Puppets tops the list of greatest heavy metal records of all time in a readers poll, according to Rolling Stone Magazine. The top ten list compiled from reader submissions is topped by Metallica who have four mentions. That’s followed by Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. Sabbath has two albums on the top ten. Other notables include Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin and Guns ‘N Roses.

Concert troubles

Speaking of heavy metal, a weekend show in upstate New York is getting a bad rap by locals and there’s an effort to shut it down. Titled “Redneck Hellfest III,” the show is being put on by the Heavy Metal Mafia—a bunch of unrecognized metal bands. Apparently the organizers were kicked out of one venue and are scheduling the event in another venue but locals are going to court today to get an injunction to stop the weekend show from happening. The festival is billed as having overnight camping and on-site tattoos. Locals say the organizers don’t have a special use permit.

In-studio videos

Sevendust has been busy in the studio, and the videos show it! Following the trend of other bands posting candid videos showing the behind the scenes studio work, Sevendust has posted another in a series of videos. The band’s ninth studio album is expected out sometime in early 2013.

Debut Album Released, Concert Canceled & Multiple Release Planned

Debut album released

Fear and the Nervous System album cover
Fear and the Nervous System album cover

Fear and the Nervous System has released their self titled album. That’s the side project from Korn’s guitarist—not the one that went all churchy—but the one that’s currently still with Korn … James “Monkey” Shaffer. The band features Monkey on guitar and also Korn’s keyboardist Zac Baird, Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman, Faith No More bassist Billy Gould, and Leopold Ross on guitars. It took a while to nail down a singer as the band worked on the music. Eventually they brought on Steve Krolikowski from the band Repeater and the mix is perfect! Swing by the Bishop's blog for a link to listen to the album streaming online. It’s available everywhere you can get music.

Canceled show

Last night’s Stone Temple Pilots show in Alberta, Canada was canceled because of Scott Weiland’s voice. Reports say he strained his vocal cords and has been put on 48 hours rest. The band intends to continue the rest of their tour which wraps up Sunday in Sacramento.

Multiple releases planned

Told you earlier this week about My Chemical Romance releasing their previously unreleased 2009 album Conventional Weapons. Now it’s being reported they’ll release the album in small two-song installments over the next few months. The first is due out October 30th.

From the Vault, & Police Beat

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

My Chemical Romance reaches out to you
My Chemical Romance reaches out to you

From the vault

My Chemical Romance plans to release a previously unreleased album soon after scrapping the tracks several years ago. The band posted a note saying that they recorded the album Conventional Weapons back in 2009 but held the tracks back and instead recorded the album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Why? Guitarist Frank Iero said they wrote songs to fit a specific plan but then the band flogged themselves after arguing about the album not feeling right. Iero said that the tracks from Conventional Weapons are some of his favorite tracks. An announcement is expected in the next couple of weeks about the release of My Chemical Romance’s Conventional Weapons.

Police beat

There were a slew of arrests over the weekend at a KISS/Motley Crue show in New York. Ten people all together were arrested at the Saturday Show at Darien Center, New York. Some of those arrested: a 43-year-old woman taken to a security trailer after being accused of harassment ended up being accused of kicking an officer, a 44-year-old woman also accused of harassment is charged with biting a security officer and hitting him in the throat, a 23-year-old man was charged with disorderly conduct towards his girlfriend and several officers and most notably a 31-year-old man was charged with trespass after he refused to leave the venue when asked multiple times. Note to self, KISS and Motley Crue fans don’t take crap from nobody!

Green Day Rocks GMA, G'NR Auction, & New Album Trailer

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Greed Day rocks GMA

If you missed Green Day’s performance and interview on Good Morning America Friday morning, here’s the gist: They played a couple of tunes and talked about their upcoming album ¡Uno!, which is due out next week, and they talked about why they have a trilogy coming out in the next few months. Billy Joe Armstrong said that they didn’t mean to write three albums, but when they sat down to piece together the new material they quickly had thirty songs ready to go and decided to put them out as a three-parter. Video of their performance includes their tune “Longview” where the censors did a poor job censoring out the curse words. You can watch the video online, which includes the interview. Watch their appearance on GMA here.

G'NR auction

Some bands do it to raise funds for legal defense, like Lamb of God. Other do it because they are no longer rock stars and need to fuel their habits somehow. Which is it for Guns ‘N Roses? Hard telling. But the news is that the band is auctioning off their touring equipment. Through a bizarre user name on eBay, the band is selling off a slew of amplifiers, keyboards, microphones, guitar effects, pedal boards, backdrops, road cases and more. A note posted to the band’s website confirms the authenticity of the sale and says they’re simply trying to make room for new stuff.

New album trailer

Soundgarden’s new album King Animal is on it’s way out and there’s an eighty-five second video trailer featuring desolate tundra, fast moving clouds over a mountain, ghostly images of band members and a sample of some music. The album hits shelves November 13th. Watch the trailer below or follow this link.

Concert Video to be Released, Playing for Elites, & He Broke His Foot

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Concert video to be released

Led Zeppelin will be releasing a DVD of their 2007 concert, recorded in London—but not until it makes the rounds in movie theaters. The band has been teasing the release on their Facebook and Twitter page and now they’ve released a short trailer for what will be a truly epic film. Titled Celebration Day, the concert will be aired in 1,500 theaters around the world October 17th. Then, just in time for Christmas, the band will release the concert footage on several different video and audio platforms November 19th. Get more details on the screening and the release of the movie at LedZeppelin.com.

Playing for elites

Foo Fighters have been busy, playing to elites in politics and technology. Several weeks ago at the Democratic National Convention, Foo Fighters performed for delegates there to nominate President Obama for a second term in the White House. This week, the band performed for a crowd at the unveiling of Apple’s new iPhone 5. They performed acoustic versions of “My Hero,” “Times Like These,” and “Walk.” Their next big performance is for Global Festival, a concert to raise funds for poverty worldwide.

He broke his foot

“Ok this sucks but doctor just said I broke two bones in my foot,” that’s a tweet from Motley Crue’s Vince Neil. After a concert with KISS in Ohio, the Crue front man said he may have broken his foot and he’d have to get an x-ray in Toronto. After the x-ray, doctors confirmed he broke two bones. Now he’ll have to wear a cast on stage.

New Taproot Video, Corgan's Tea Shop Opens, & Zombie's Film Debuts

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

New Taproot video

Taproot has released a video for their tune “The Everlasting.” The video is a continuation of their last officially released video “No Surrender.” The tunes come off the bands latest album The Episodes which was released in April of this year. Front man Stephen Richards says the video was a breeze conceptually, because it is a continuation from that last video and it’s not a “standing in a warehouse performing” type of video that you see too often in the rock world. Taproot will be with Nonpoint in Springfield at The Boondocks on North Dirksen October 6th.

Corgan's tea shop opens

He’s got a new album out, a tour that will be hitting up St. Louis and now he’s got a tea shop. It’s been in the works for a while, but Billy Corgan’s dreams of owning a tea shop are now reality. Corgan will play several acoustic sets when he holds his grand opening for Madame ZuZu’s tea shop in Highland Park, up north by Chicago. The Smashing Pumpkins front man says he envisioned the shop to be a kind of Chinese tea shop that would be found in Paris … if that makes any sense. There’ll be different types of music on the overhead speakers, photo galleries and art displays featured at the tea shop.

Zombie's film debuts

It’s about time! Rob Zombies new film Lords of Salem made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival this week. One reviewer called it Zombie’s most ambitious, most accomplished and most unnerving film yet. There is no set theatrical release day yet.  Watch some videos from the film fest here and also an interview with Zombie here.

Hyped Up, Forthcoming Biopic, Signing with Major Label

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Hyped up

I don’t remember as much hype about an upcoming album release than what’s happening with Green Day. The band has been in the news non-stop for months about a variety of things—tours, sickness, and even a partnership with Angry Birds. Now the band is in the news for the release of some music videos you can watch over and over again online. They’ve already released official videos for the radio single “Oh Love” and the explicit tune “Kill the DJ.” Now we’ve got “Nuclear Family” at our disposal! Green Day plans to release ¡Uno! in two weeks, followed by two other albums later this year and early next year. On the TV circuit, Green Day will be on America’s Got Talent Thursday Night and Good Morning America Friday Morning.

Forthcoming biopic

Warrant fans, listen up, there’s gonna be a biopic about late front man Jani Lane. The role of the front man is being played by Jeff Dandurand who is a comedian and radio personality—he’s also going to direct the film. He says that he wants the movie to highlight Lane as a serious songwriter and also how crazy he got when abusing drugs and alcohol. Not sure when the movie, titled Cherry Pie Guy, is due out but it’s expected sometime in 2013.

Signing with major label

While other mainstay artists are going independent, Soundgarden is reported to be signing on with a major record company, Universal Music Group. The band’s first album in nearly 16 years, titled King Animal is reported to be out November 13th.

Going on Tour, According to Maynard, & What's the Latest?

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Green Day looking forward to tour
Green Day looking forward to tour

Going on tour

Get ready for Green Day to hit the road. The band has announced a tour to support their three upcoming albums. They’ll be in Rosemont, Illinois, at the Allstate Arena January 8th, and Moline, Illinois, February 1st. Presale is available to Green Day fan club members and each purchase for members of Idiot Club will get a digital download of the album ¡Uno! with each ticket they purchase. ¡Uno!, the first of three albums, comes out two weeks from today with ¡Dos! out later this year and ¡Trè! early next year.  Get more details about the tour here.

According to Maynard

So what did Maynard James Keenan talk about in his first column for the Phoenix New Times? Well, in fine style, Maynar talks about his winemaking, but that’s not all. The Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer front man also said that we are living in the End of Days and that everyone should empty their bank accounts and send him cashiers checks and a list of all their assets, toys, deeds, and patents. He says that the bad thing about being a pessimist is that when the world does end he can’t stand up and say “I told you so.” The tongue-in-cheek column can be read online here.

What's the latest?

Speaking of Maynard—his band A Perfect Circle has one show scheduled for this year. They’ll be playing in Las Vegas December 29th at Planet Hollywood. His other band Tool hasn’t released a new album since 2006 but rumors persist that they’re working on new material separately to come together to lay down the new tracks. There’s no word on when that will be out.

Maynard to Write Column, Video Shoot in Des Moines, & Hope to Have it Out This Year

Maynard to write column

He's a musician, an actor, a wine maker--now Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer front man Maynard James Keenan is adding columnist to his repertoire with a column to be published today. Keenan will be writing a biweekly column for the alternative weekly paper the Phoenix New Times--it’s the equivalent of the Illinois Times. What’s he gonna write about? Not sure, but he’s been given free reign to write about whatever he wants!  Read more about Maynard's soon-to-be published articles here.

Video shoot in Des Moines

Told you last week about how Stone Sour wants fans to take part in the video shoot for their tunes “Gone Sovereign” and “Absolute Zero.” Now it’s being revealed that the video will be shot in Des Moines, Iowa—which is a lot closer than places like LA or New York City. Filming is scheduled to take place September 26th. The album House of Gold and Bones Part 1 is due out October 23rd.

Hope to have it out this year

Buckcherry hopes to still have their new album out before the end of the year. Titled Confessions, the band also plans to release a short film alongside the album—something they want to enter into film festivals. Guitarist Keith Nelson says there are some loose ends they’re working to tie up and once the band knows the release date they’ll let the world know. Nelson also says that the new album started out as a concept album, but has since gotten away from that. He says that there is a definite theme throughout the record and singer Josh Todd has been working on the screenplay to coincide with the album. It’s expected to be out either later this year or early next year. No word yet on the release of the film.  Watch Nelson talk about the new album here.

Slipknot responds to doctor's charges, VMA's suck, except for Green Day and New Pussy Riot Video

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Slipknot responds to doctor's charges

Told you yesterday about the pain doctor that is charged with over prescribing people leading to eight deaths including Slipknot bassist Paul Gray … now the band is coming out saying it brings back up the feelings of anger and sadness. In a statement, Slipknot says Dr. Daniel Baldi “took advantage of our brother’s illness while he was in a position to help others.” They’re urging for justice to be served so it won’t happen to anyone else. Baldi is facing charges including eight counts of involuntary manslaughter, including the death of Paul Gray who overdosed in an Iowa hotel in 2010.

VMA's suck, except for Green Day

And once again, the MTV VMAs was a poop fest, I mean pop fest with absolutely no good rock music winning awards. It was full of some Drakes and Minajes and even that Chris Brown character got an award. Didn’t he beat up Rihanna? Anyways, she also got an award. Seriously, why even waste the time watching that garbage—except for the Green Day performance. But tanks to the miracles of the internet, we no longer have to suffer the dregs of MTV culture to enjoy that performance. Make a point during one of your breaks this Friday to check out Green Day performing “Let Yourself Go” online.

New Pussy Riot Video

Speaking of Green Day, they get a mention alongside the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna and Bjork in a new video posted by the Russian punk rock group Pussy Riot thanking musicians around the world for their support. They also torch a huge poster of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Watch that video below or at this link.

Paul Gray's doctor charged

The doctor who, quote, “treated” late Slipknot bassist Paul Gray has been charged with prescribing large amounts of narcotic painkillers to eight people who overdosed, including Gray. Dr. Daniel Baldi is accused of eight counts of involuntary manslaughter according to court documents. Reports say that Dr. Baldi unintentionally caused Gray’s death by writing ‘scripts of known addictive drugs. Dr. Baldi’s attorney says they will fight the charges in court. Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel in 2010.

Tour dates announced

Lamb of God will be taking to the road with a North American tour starting October 30th in Phoenix. November 7th, the band will be at the Pageant in St. Louis, and November 30th in Chicago at the Congress Ballroom. The band had to cancel their tour with Mastodon this summer because front man Randy Blythe was in a Prague jail facing manslaughter charges after a fan was thrown off a stage and died ten days later. Blythe has since been freed on bond but says he will return to the Czech Republic to clear his name.

MTV VMAs tonight

Does anyone watch MTV anymore? Well tonight, that’s where you’ll be able to see the Video Music Awards. Despite having to cancel a show in Italy over the weekend because front man Billy Joe Armstrong got sick, Green Day says they will perform tonight for the VMAs. The Black Keys will also perform tonight and they’re bringing the guy who danced in their “Lonely Boy” video.

How do you know you have a substance abuse problem? When you make a fuss on an airplane about not getting a drink! Puddle of Mudd front man Wes Scantlin got nabbed by police for being drunk and making a fuss on an airplane. Reports indicate that the singer was arrested at an airport in Austin, Texas, after the plane he was on board was actually rerouted because of the ordeal. Apparently he got into a tussle with a flight attendant. What was the fight about? According to reports, it was about alcohol. Police arrested Scantlin for public intoxication and later charged him with interfering with a flight crew. He’s still behind bars in Texas. There is no statement from the band. A bench warrant was issued last month when Scantlin failed to show up to court for a controlled substance charge. He was supposed to show proof he had enrolled in a court ordered drug program.

Behind-the-scenes

As I Lay Dying has been releasing some webisodes featuring the band in the studio. The third in the series has just been posted online. It shows a bunch of candid shots of the band laying down tracks and also some downtime as they snack and watch two different movies in two different rooms. Their new album hits stores September 25th.

Dirnt says that doctors thought it wasn’t a good idea for Armstrong to play. So far the band is not indicating what was wrong with Armstrong. Dirnt simply said that the singer was hospitalized with an illness. Green Day’s next scheduled show is September 21st in Las Vegas. The band’s first album of a trilogy comes out September 25th.

AC/DC honored

I guess you can officially say that AC/DC is a national treasure in Australia. The band has joined dozens of others recordings to be placed in Australia’s Nation Registry of Recorded Sound. There are only 64 recordings in that registry and the band from Down Under has secured a spot for their tune “It’s A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)”. The song is not only an anthem for the continent, it is also one of the only songs to feature a bagpipe solo.

"Satanic" metal show in Egypt

Stories like this make you thankful to live in a free country. A heavy metal concert in Egypt is being investigated by authorities there because they say it was a Satanic heavy metal concert. According to a complaint filed by the Muslim Brotherhood, concert attendants were wearing t-shirts with Satanic signs on them and there’s video evidence of what they describe as Satanic rituals being performed by the audience. The concert promoters deny the allegations.
