He's Fired, Getting the Lawyers Ready, Sneak Peek and Manson Playing Himself (Not With Himself)

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

He's fired

Scott Weilend says "nuh uh."
Scott Weilend says "nuh uh."

Just as he’s about to start a solo tour, he finds out in the press that he’s fired from a band he started. Stone Temple Pilots have given a pink slip to front man Scott Weiland. The press release went out yesterday simply saying “Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland,” but it really doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s followed the troubled singer’s career. The firing was even hinted at by Slash a few months ago when he was asked about Weiland’s insistence on joining back up with Velvet Revolver, a band he was let go from back in 2008. Slash told a radio station up north that Weiland wanting to get back into the band was because STP let him go. That was confirmed yesterday.

Getting the lawyers ready

Meanwhile, Weiland says he’s not sure how he can be fired from the band he started. Just after news spread far and wide of his dismissal from the band, Weiland says it’s gonna be up to the lawyers to figure out what is next because when you get lawyers involved, that always helps mend relationships … not. The first date of Weiland’s solo tour is tomorrow in Flint, Michigan.

Sneak peek

We’re starting to get a deeper look at the forthcoming comic book based on Stone Sour’s concept albums House of Gold and Bones. Front man Corey Taylor revealed to Loudwire several pages of the forthcoming four-issue comic book drawn up and published by Dark Horse comics. An official snippit of the comic says it’s about a human on a journey to either salvation or destruction and all along the way he’s taunted by crazed mobs and a mysterious ally. The first issue should be out April 17th. The second album is set to drop April 9th. Get the link to see the released pages here.

Playing himself (not with himself)

Shock rocker Marilyn Manson is gonna make another acting appearance … this time it won’t really be much of an acting job because he’s gonna play himself. He’ll appear in the Showtime show Californication where he’ll act as a temptation to the character Becca. Catch that episode this Sunday. Check your local listings.

Billie Joe Tells All, Opiate for the Masses, Streaming Online, and Three Illinois Dates

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

The cover of Rolling Stone Magazine with Billie Joe

Billie Joe tells all

If you’ve been wondering what Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong was doing in rehab, you may want to pick up the next issue of Rolling Stone magazine. The Green Day front man gave his first post rehab interview to the music mag where he talks about his addiction to alcohol and prescription pain killers. He says it got to the point where he didn’t know where he’d find himself after complete blackouts. The band has a series of shows this spring and they’ll also perform at South By Southwest next month.

Opiate for the masses

When we said there wouldn’t be any Tool releases this year, we meant new stuff. Apparently fans will get a chance at picking up a re-issue of Tool’s debut six song EP Opiate. But, as with all things Tool, the band is trying to make the release as exclusive as possible. They’ll only release 5,000 copies in runs of 1,000. Each run will have unique artwork. And, you won’t be able to buy it in brick and mortar stores. You’ll only be able to pick up the album through Tool’s online store. Grab it up March 26th.

Streaming online

The latest single from Rob Zombie’s forthcoming album Venamous Rat Regeneration Vendor has been revealed. The song is titled “Dead City Radio and the New Gods of Super Town,” which is just as long a clunky as the album title. A sample of the song was revealed when fans piece together a puzzle revealing the album artwork. Now the tune is streaming online. The premise of the song seems to be Zombie playing the part of a smooth and speedy Disc Jockey while singing about the past and future state of the airwaves. Zombie’s new album hits stores April 23rd.  Listen to the song below (code from Loudwire).

Three Illinois dates

Papa Roach has announced a headlining tour. The band will make the rounds with three stops in Illinois this May. Expect to see them in Joliet at MoJoes May 14th, in Libertyville at Austins May 15th, and in Peoria May 16th. Tickets for all shows go on sale today.]

NIN Twenty Thirteen, Sevendust is coming to town, and Lining up Orion

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Trent Reznor soaking wet ...
Trent Reznor soaking wet ...

NIN Twenty Thirteen

Nine Inch Nails will get some new life this year with an extensive tour. Trent Reznor told the world at the beginning of 2012 that there’d be new How To Destroy Angels by years end with a full album out in 2013. That came true with the new album featuring Trent and his wife Mariqueen due out next week. He also said back in 2012 that fans would get to see Nine Inch Nails in 2013. With a letter posted online by Reznor, the front man says he’s rebooting the band with some past collaborators and some new members, including members from Jane’s Addiction, King Crimson and Puscifer. In the letter to Pitchfork, Reznor says “The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.” The letter doesn’t say anything about new material, but we’re all hoping that happens. We’ll keep you posted on the latest.

Sevendust is coming to town

Sevendust has been scheduled to be in Springfield at Boondocks Saturday May 18th! As previously reported three months ago, the band was supposed to swing through on a tour this month, but that Springfield show couldn’t be lined up. Also reported months ago, we were told that Sevendust would be booked later in the year. Now the good word as announced Sunday is that Sevendust will be at Boondocks in Springfield May 18th. That weekend show adds to the amazing lineup Boondocks is bring through the capital city, including Pop Evil and Otherwise March 27th and In This Moment March 28th. Also coming to Boondocks will be Stained front man Aaron Lewis’ country act. That’s gonna be May 16th.

Lining up Orion

Speaking of shows, it was announced earlier this year that Metallica would try to help revive Motor City as Detroit Rock City. That’s where the band will stage the Orion Music + More festival in June. Now they’ve revealed that joining Metallica will be Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deftones, Rise Against and more. Definitely This Year, Wounded Warrior Wins Home, Scantlin Makes News Again, and Frehley's House and Taxes

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Mike McCready
Mike McCready rockin' out

Definitely this year

Pearl Jam says this year is definitely the year a new album will surface. For a couple of weeks, different members of the group have been giving updates on when fans can expect a new album and the latest word comes from guitarist Mike McCready who says its definitely going to happen this year. McCready tells Rolling Stone magazine that they are working on demos and the stuff that’s coming out will have a Pink Floyd vibe mixed with some punk rock-type riffs. Pearl Jam will be in Chicago at Wrigley Field this summer.

Wounded warrior wins home

Kid Rock hooked a wounded warrior up with a new home. Rock worked with Pulte Homes and Operation Finally Home to have a newly built home waiting for Sgt. David Dumar, who lost his leg and injured his arm in a roadside bomb attack while serving overseas. Dumar and his family had interviewed several times to get the home and when they thought they were headed to the final interview, that’s when Rock showed up and presented them their new home.

Wes Scantlin, innocent until proven guilty or plea deal made ...
Wes Scantlin, innocent until proven guilty or a plea deal is made ...

Scantlin makes news again

It’s never good when news about alleged criminal doings beats out news about your music career … that seems to have been the case with Puddle of Mudd front man Wes Scantlin, who’s in the news again—this time he’s accused of stealing his ex-wife’s car. According to TMZ, Jessica Scantlin went to bed last Monday to wake up and find her car gone. She then texted Scantlin’s manager who told her the location of the car, but also said “Wes didn’t take your car.” When she got the Honda Pilot back, a vehicle she won in the divorce settlement, there was some bumper damage and a missing side view mirror. Jessica says she’s 100 percent certain Wes took the car. Police are still working on getting usable finger prints.

Frehley's house and taxes

In other rock star legal troubles, former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley may lose his home. It’s reported that a bank is foreclosing on Frehley’s three-bedroom home north of New York. Court records indicate that Frehley hasn’t paid the mortgage on the $735,000 home since 2011. He’s also facing backed taxes.

New Album Plans, They'll Be In Chicago, Presumptive Innocence, and Trouble Before the Down Under

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Dave Grohl is a f**king rock star, deal with it!
Dave Grohl is a f**king rock star, deal with it!

New album plans

Dave Grohl is a workaholic. Foo Fighters are beginning work on a new album, even after front man Grohl just finished up a short stint with his Sound City Players, and premiered his documentary directorial debut with Sound City. For crying out loud, Foo Fighters just released Wasting Light in 2011! Grohl says he’s headed back to LA so the band can begin work on the new album. He’s said for a few months now that the band has been piecing together riffs for a new effort, but everyone thought there would be a bit more of a break. Guess not. No word on when a new album will be out, but it could be soon.

They'll be in Chicago

They started streaming their new album this week and also are gonna be at the Cochella Music Festival in early April … now Trent Reznor’s How To Destroy Angels has announced a slew of concerts dates. The band featuring Reznor, his wife Mariqueen Maandig, Atticus Ross, and Rob Sheridan will be up in Chicago at The Vic April 23rd. The album Welcome To Oblivion come out March 5th.

Presumptive innocence

Being on trial for manslaughter isn’t slowing down Randy Blythe and his band Lamb of God. The band has already began booking dates for 2013, even though his trial kicks back up in March, a delay because a crucial witness couldn’t appear this month. Regardless of the looming trial, Blythe and company have scheduled time for the August Resurrection Festival in Spain

Trouble before the Down Under

Slayer is having some drummer troubles. Dave Lombardo took to his Facebook page and told fans that the band has been cheating in their business dealings. He says he’s been refused a full accounting, hasn’t gotten paid and isn’t allowed to do interviews. He also blabbed that he’s not going to tour with the band. However, the rest of the band says Lombardo, a week before going to Australia, brought them new terms and that there’s more to the story than what Lombardo is letting on. They’ll be taking John Dettee of Testament Down Under.

Two full weeks before the album hits stores, How To Destroy Angels is giving fans an advance. Pitchfork has the exclusive where you can stream the first full length album from Trent Reznor’s side project and also check out a good amount of album artwork. The album Welcome to Oblivion hits stores March 5th.

Cross promotion

Billy Corgan has a new gig … he’s doing commercials for a Chicago area furniture store. The next time you’re in the area, you may want to check out the local TV for the Walter E. Smithe furniture company. The commercial shows employees playing musical chairs with Billy, but then a wrestling match breaks out. We all know that Billy has a love for the sport as he’s involved with Resistance Pro wrestling … some wrestlers from that group also appear in the spot. The Smashing Pumpkings front man did the commercial for a $50,000 donation to a Chicago animal welfare charity. It’s on YouTube, watch below or at this link.

They didn't say that

A few weeks ago, there was this story in Esquire magazine that quoted the unnamed Navy SEAL who shot and killed Osama bin Laden. In that interview he talked about how the US Military would play Metallica songs for terror suspects before they began interrogations. The man identified only as “The Shooter” also said that when Metallica found out, they requested their music not be used. Well, now, Metallica is saying they never commented to the military about that. That calls into question the whole story, if you ask me. In the Esquire story, “The Shooter” said that instead of using Metallica, they ended up using Demon Hunter music, something Demon Hunter says has given them more press requests than they can handle.

Ten sells 10 million

What’s it like to sell 10 million copies of an album? Just ask Pearl Jam. Billboard reports that the bands debut album Ten just sold 10 million copies. It’s only the 22nd album to breach that threshold since Nielsen SoundScan begin tracking numbers in 1991. Not bad for a grunge band from Seattle.

The new Buckcherry album is streaming online. You can hear Confessions online through AOL’s NoiseCreep. With the release of the album this week comes with it an announcement that the band will do three different days at a small exclusive venue in LA, their hometown. Currently, they’re out on tour with Kid Rock. They’ll be in Bloomington March 28th at the US Cellular Coliseum.

HellYeah is looking for some fans to sponsor their NASCAR car … and your pockets don’t have to be very deep. The driver, Jeremy Clements, is planning on painting the Band of Brother album cover on the hood of his car and fans can get their names on the decals … to sweeten the pot even more, fans will be able to get a digital copy of single, digital posters, and a discount to Hellyeah shows. Plus, there’s a chance at an even bigger prize. The car will be driven April 26th in Richmond.

Ambassador White

This year’s Record Store Day is coming up April 20th. That’s the day that independent music stores, which are becoming few and far between with the advent of digital music, will offer up some special items only available through those venues. This year, Jack White has been named the ambassador. It’s said that he will invigorate the idea that there’s beauty and romance in the act of visiting a record shop and getting turned on to something new. Typically there are a ton of offerings from a variety of artists spanning musical genres available on Record Store Day.

Over two decades

It’s hard to believe that Rage Against the Machine’s debut album is over 20 years old … but that becomes more believable when you see the old school footage of in-store concert from 1992. The video shows the band, 20 years younger than they are now, at record store performing 8 songs from their debut. The 40 minute video is available online.

He Thinks Blythe is Innocent, Double Standards, and Proper Video Expected

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

He thinks Blythe is innocent

Slash is sounding off on what he thinks the verdict should be in the case of Randy Blythe. The legendary guitarist says that the Lamb of God singer charged with manslaughter in Prague is not “in anyway shape or form” guilty. Slash is touring the world in support of his Apocalyptic Love album and he stopped in the Czech Republic to talk with a media outlet. There he said the legal system is so different and commented on Blythe being incarcerated for several weeks, even after paying bail. With the Prague courts being so different, Slash says he’s uncertain what the outcome of the trial will be. Blythe’s trial picks back up in March. He’s accused of throwing a fan off the stage, a fan who hit his head and died days afterwards.

Bieber and Carney
Bieber and Carney

Double standards

I wonder what Justin Bieber’s lawyers think about The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney hijacking Bieber’s name for his personal twitter account over the weekend. Bieber’s fans didn’t like it much. We really don’t care either way and quite frankly wouldn’t notice if Bieber were to slip into obscurity … but it’s ironic that The Black Keys are quick to sue people who use music similar to theirs but when it comes to actually copying an artist name and using that on Twitter then that’s fair game. OK! We got it! Carney changed his Twitter handle back to normal Sunday.

Proper video expected

We’ve already seen the very unique lyric video for Stone Sour’s latest track “Do Me A Favor,” and now the band says they’ve got a proper video on the way out. Front man Corey Taylor says the animation in the new video is “live action, but it’s painted, so it looks really, really cool.” No word on when the new video will be out, but the album House of Gold and Bones Part 2 comes out April 9th with the first edition of the comic based on the concept to be released April 17th.

Leaked Online, Summertime Release, and Hijinks Caught on Camera

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Leaked online

The first single from David Draiman's side Device has leaked online (listen below or at this link). The tune "Vilify" was posted on a YouTube video over the weekend. Draiman even acknowledged the leak on his own Twitter page where he said ... it's out there, may as well share it. The tune is heavy on the synth, drum machine and beefy guitar, and will definitely be welcomed by fans of Disturbed. As for Disturbed’s future, Draiman posted about the band, simply saying that they’re on hiatus, which is an extended break … not a break up. The self-titled album from Device hits stores April 9th.

Summertime release

Five Finger Death Punch are hinting at a summertime release for their next album. A series of Instagram photos posted by guitarist Zoltan Bathory came with messages that the band was back in the studio cutting some new tracks. One message said the album would be called ... and then left it blank. FFDP guitarist Jason Hook revealed a while back that the band has a recording rig they take with them on tour that allows them to put ideas down. He equated making music to going to the gym ... you've gotta keep exercising, he says. There still no firm date on a new album, but it's expected out sometime this summer.

Hijinks caught on camera

The new video from Halestorm is making the rounds (watch below or at this link) and it shows what it's like for the band as they travel on the road. "Freak Like Me," the latest single, shows the band on stage, backstage, and on the bus, with plenty of hijinks during their downtime. Having just come off a Grammy win, the band is looking for some springtime shows joining Bullet for my Valentine for the HardDrive Live tour Beginning in April.

Inside The Studio, And The Title Is, and Face-time

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Inside the studio

A new video from Black Sabbath shows the band in studio and talking about the new album. IN the video, Ozzy Osbourne is joined by original Sabbath members Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi, but drummer Bill Ward is no where to be seen … nor is he even mentioned. It’s been reported for months that Ward was not happy with his contract and the band wouldn’t bend. Instead, they have Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk in studio jamming. Producing the album is famed rock producer Rick Rubin. Ozzy says that the forthcoming album, tentatively titled 13 is the most important album of his career. There’s still no firm release date for the original band members’ first attempt together in nearly 35 years. Check that video out on the front page of or at this link.

And the title is …

Alice in Chains asked fans to decode the past to unveil the future … which meant going online and unscramble some letters to reveal the title of their forthcoming album. After putting together the pieces, fans found the name of the album to be The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. The album is expected to drop sometime in May. The band has a bunch of dates across the country throughout the spring, revving up to the release of the album.

Dave Grohl continues to make the rounds promoting his movie and a forthcoming accompanying soundtrack. He was on the Colbert Report Wednesday before performing a show in New York City with the Sound City Players. Then he was on Letterman last night. Sound City is now available to rent online through YouTube, Amazon and elsewhere and also available for purchase … visit for more details.

Rockin' spring, Keep the Mill Going and Roth's Rage

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Rockin' spring

Dammit, Maria Brink is on fire!
Dammit, Maria Brink is on fire!

If you're a fan of live rock shows, this spring in Springfield it's gonna be a bit off the hook. Several shows have been lined up and there's more to come. First up, prepare for Pop Evil taking over at Boondocks off N. Dirsken Wednesday March 27th. They'll be joined by Otherwise and Crackjaw. Tickets are only 10 bux! That's three bands for $10! Then, the following day at Boondocks, one of the goddesses of metal Maria Brink and her band In This Moment will tear up the stage. They'll be joined by Love and Death and All Hail the Yeti. That show, Thursday March 28th, is $15 in advance, $17 day of. Tickets are on sale now! Get them while you can. We're told there will be more announcements in the very near future, so keep it close with Springfield's Concert Leader, 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station!

Keep the mill going

In fine Maynard style, he's ignited the rumor mill on the possibility of new Tool sometime, but just last week he said there will be nothing new in 2013. Speaking to SPIN magazine, who is hosting Puscifer's latest EP, Maynard says there are a basket of noodles when it comes to Tool jamming sessions, just noodles, no dishes. That'll keep the Maynard maggots busy for a bit.

Roth's rage

There's trouble on team Van Halen. It appears David Lee Roth is sharing his concerns with the media that he wants to welcome back original bassist Michael Anthony, though he acknowledges that Eddie has his own vision which includes having his son Wolfgang get some of that Van Halen money. Roth tells Rolling Stone that Anthony had a great voice for back up harmonies. He also wants the band to write some real new music and not just rehash old demos and he wants the band to travel to more countries.

Licking the Lunacy, Nine to Twelve, Put the Pieces Together, and Donkey Punch the Night

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Licking the lunacy

Queens of the Stone age have provided a cryptic update concerning their new album. IN a letter posted online, apparently to UK Rock magazine Kerrang!, the band says that the new album has no tricks at all and is a “document of the manic ups and downs of the last year … we decided to ride shotgun on our emotional bandwagon. We embraced our evil, held the horrible, licked the lunacy and … as a result, [are] on Cloud 9.” The letter finishes with the author saying they can’t write anymore ‘cause their phone is dying.  That's just one of three letters ... see the three letters here, here, and here.  There’s no timeline for the new album, but there are some heavy hitters like the return of original bassist Nick Oliveri, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl and even Elton John set to appear on the album.

Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor
Rob Zombie's album cover for Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor. Put the puzzle together here.

Nine to twelve

Speaking of timelines for new albums, Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard is saying there’s about a 9 to 12 month timeline for their next attempt. This is just another in a string up updates about a new album. The untitled attempt will be the first album from the band since 2009’s Backspacer.

Put the pieces together

Rob Zombie has a unique way for you to get a sample of his new album. You’ve gotta go and figure out a puzzle. When fans work the pieces of the online puzzle together they end up revealing the album cover for the upcoming Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor. Not only that, fans end up revealing the a sample of the song “Dead City Radio.” You might want to make sure your flash player is updated before working on the puzzle.

Donkey Punch the Night

In another story of streaming new music online, the latest EP from Puscifer is streaming at the website for Spin magazine. The EP titled Donkey Punch the Night comes in at seven songs and features right at the top a cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Maynard says the title of the EP, Donkey Punch the Night is nothing sexual. He also tells the magazine that the band is focusing on EP albums with a limited number of tunes because focusing on 15 songs is “daunting.”

Badmouthing The Grammys, Who is More Brutal, and Device Teaser

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Badmouthing The Grammys

The Grammys were Sunday and there are a ton of rock stars on Twitter that didn’t have too many nice things to say about the awards ceremony. Go check out the accounts of Corey Taylor who says the Grammys don’t respect Rock at all,

Or Dave Navarro saying how people watch zombies on Walking Dead but zombies watch people on the Grammys,

Or Maynard’s rant … Even Adeletas Way didn’t have nice things to say.  There was only one true rock/metal category that Halestorm walked away with.

Who is more brutal?

An article in Esquire talking with the Navy SEAL assassin of Osama bin Laden reveals that Metallica’s music was used just before prisoner interrogations to quote “soften up” the prisoner. But, once the band found out about this, they requested their music be removed from the procedures. In the article, the SEAL says the band Demon Hunter, on the other hand, volunteered their music for that use. Demon Hunter sent them CDs and patches. The SEAL says he wore the Demon Hunter patch on every mission, even the one that brought down bin Laden. Now, who’s more brutal?

Device teaser

A teaser trailer for David Draiman’s new side project has been released online. The band, named Device, features the Disturbed front man and also Geno Lenardo, the guitarist from Filter. In past statements, Draiman said the band is going to be more guitar-centered industrial metal than his previous creations. The trailer doesn’t really reveal much of the band’s sound other than a lame guitar riff with sporadic drums. Draiman is seen along with Lenardo and a drummer in a white studio with some weird trinkets injected into the frame. The new album will feature some heavy hitters, like Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows, Serj Tankian, Tom Morrello and Halestorm’s Lizzy Hale. The first single Vilify hits rock radio February 19th.

And the Grammy Goes To, New Song, and He Lost

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

And the Grammy goes to!

That Grammy is not made of chocolate ...
That Grammy is not made of chocolate ...

Last night some 80 categories of music awards were announced at the Grammys. Except for a handful, a ton of awards we don't care about. But the ones to note include the following: for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, Halestorm's "Love Bites (So Do I) beat Manson, Maiden Megadeth, Lamb of God and Anthrax. For Best Score Soundtrack for Visaul Media, Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and his production partner Atticus Ross took the Grammy for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The big winner in the rock category was The Black Keys. They walked away with Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song -- both for "Lonely Boy," and Best Rock Album for El Camino. The Black Keys also performed at the Grammys, as did a few other acts, including Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. He hooked up with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, and hip hop legends Chuck D and LL Cool J. LL just so happened to be the host of the Grammys. They performed a few songs, but quickley were cut off by sponsorship mentions in a lame attempt to keep the length of the show. Last night was the 55th annual Grammy Awards.

New song online

Stone Sour’s latest song is out with a lyric video streaming online. The tune “Do Me a Favor” will be on the upcoming second installment of House of Gold and Bones. The video is set against a desolate backdrop with some truly stunning visuals and lyrics projected on decaying walls and crumbling buildings. As for the song, it’s heavy and in your face. Front man Corey Taylor says he hopes eventually make a movie about the concept, but first there will be a comic book series released featuring a character that is based off House of Gold and Bones. The comic book will act as a story board for the film project. The second installment will drop in stores April 9th.  Watch the new video below or at this link.

He lost

As was expected, the lawsuit that Axl Rose filed against Activision was dismissed. The failed lawsuit claimed that Activision didn’t have permission to use of a Slash looking character on one of their Guitar Hero video games, something Rose says was not part of the agreement for the game maker to use some Guns ‘N Roses songs. Rose was suing for $20 million.

He Popped On Stage, Another Star, Super-group at Grammys, and It's a Cover Up

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

He popped on stage

It’s been reported that Marilyn Manson collapsed and puked on stage while performing in Canada. Now it comes out it was because of the flu. A two minute up close and high quality video shows Manson keeled over, heaving … then the money shot of puke being expelled onto the stage. Nice chat just in time for breakfast. Anyways, after a few seconds of feeling miserable among flashing strobe lights of “The Beautiful People,” some stage crew members come over and help Manson off stage. The band finished the song, and subsequently the concert.

Another star

Queens of the Stone Age are adding even more star power to their upcoming album. It’s already been revealed that the band will be graced by the likes of Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and rock music’s Dave Grohl. Now it’s being reported that Elton John will join the record. The appearance was revealed by John when he was a guest on Chelsea Lately where Dave Grohl has been filling in all week. That makes sense.

Super-group at Grammys

Coming up this Sunday on CBS, the Grammys will air and there’ll be all kinds of performances from across the music spectrum, including QLZ favorites The Black Keys, who are up for several awards. Also at the Grammy Awards, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello will join with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, LL Cool J, Public Enemy’s Chuck D and DJ Z-Trip on stage to perform. Not sure what, but they’ll do it!

It’s a cover up

All you hoping to see some sexy and revealing get ups from the artists attending the Grammy Awards Sunday are gonna have to just go get your fix from those websites that are blocked at work. CBS, who plan on airing the Grammy Awards Sunday, put out a memo Wednesday that is requesting attendees wear clothes that will leave their “buttocks and female breasts … adequately covered.” They also say see through clothing, thong type costumes and other things that show the genital region are a no, no. Bunch of prudes!

Trial Delayed, Coming Box Set, It's A Bit Fishy, and They Ain't No Bottom Band

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Trial delayed

The manslaughter trial where Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe stands in defense has been delayed until March. That motion for the delay was actually requested by Blythe’s legal team because a key witness was sick and could not make the court proceedings. Blythe is expected to return to the United States until the trial resumes in less than a month. The singer is accused of throwing a fan off stage. The fan hit his head and died days after the Prague concert in 2010.  Read more about the ongoing saga here.

Coming box set

Van Halen's box set

Van Halen is collecting their classic recordings for a box set that will be released in March. Titled Van Halen: The Studio Albums 1978-1984, the collection features six of the bands best selling albums. That’s the era that David Lee Roth was with the band until their reunion in 2012. Expect to pick up the collection March 26th.

It's a bit fishy

Antrax’s drummer Charlie Benante is calling BS on the departure of their guitarist Rob Caggiano. It was reported a couple of months ago that Rob would be leaving the band to focus on his work as a producer. Earlier this week the Danish rockers Volbeat announced that Rob was joining their band. Benante says that it’s confusing for fans to read of Caggiano’s departure to produce … then just a few days later he hooked up with a new band. Benante calls it sketchy. Anthrax quickly grabbed up Shadows Fall guitarist Jon Donais to fill Caggiano’s shoes.

They ain't no bottom band

Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx is talking about the band’s next album and a possible farewell tour. Sixx says he wants the band to say goodbye on a high note. The bassist says he’s got a ton of new riffs and he’s sure Mick Mars does as well. There isn’t a concrete timeframe on when a new album or tour will happen, but we’ll keep you posted.

New Zombie Movie Trailer, New Shoes, Not This Year, and Streaming Online

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

New Zombie movie trailer

A new two-minute trailer for Rob Zombie’s latest film Lords of Salem is making the rounds online. Watch it below or at this link. What looks to be a ridiculous supernatural thriller, the film focuses on some crazy “prophecy foretold” and some curse of witches possessing the soles of Salem women. There are some bizarre visuals, some grotesque characters and the tag line “We’ve been waiting. We’ve always been waiting.” And we have been waiting for about two years for this movie. It will hit theaters April 19th.

New shoes

If there’s one thing rock stars can’t seem to get enough of, it’s their own shoes. Metallica is the latest band to come out with a line of line of footwear. The band has continued their partnership with Vans to come out with four different pairs of shoes, each one individually designed by a different member of the band. Band members even made videos of their shoes, showcasing the design.

Not this year

Corey Taylor is talking about Slipknot. He’s says there are five shows, all overseas, but it’s still not time yet. In an interview with Loudwire (watch below or at this link), Taylor says he hopes that the handful of overseas shows will bring the band back together and out of the dark place they’ve been since the death of bassist Paul Gray. He says that they may start working on some new material next year with an album late in the year or early 2015, but that’s not set in stone. Taylor says he’s focusing on Stone Sour right now.

Streaming online

Puscifer, the side project from Tool and A Perfect Circle front man Maynard James Keenan, is streaming their latest song online at their website. The tune called “Breathe” will appear on the band’s EP Donkey Punch The Night that comes out February 19th.

On trial, New Album Announced, The Dave Grohl Bump and No New Tool

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Randy Blythe ready for trial
Randy Blythe ready for trial

On trial

Randy Blythe began defending himself from manslaughter charges in Prague yesterday. The Lamb of God singer posted an updated on his Instagram saying that he is calm and prepared. He also thanks everyone for their positive thoughts and prayers. Blythe was arrested and held for several weeks in a Prague jail last year, charged with manslaughter in the death of a fan that died after a Lamb of God concert. The fan reportedly jumped on stage multiple times with conflicting reports as to who pushed him off the stage. When the fan was ejected off stage, he hit his head and died days later. It's unclear how long the trial might last. Blyth could get 5 to 10 years if convicted. There's a Czeck news report (below or at this link) showing Blythe in court, but it's in gibberish ... good luck translating.

New album announced

Here’s just a taste of the latest Volbeat news: The Danish rockers have unveiled details on their forthcoming album and are welcoming former Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano to the band. The album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, but we’re still unclear on a release date. We’ll keep you posted.

Dave Grohl as Chelsea Lately

The Dave Grohl Bump

Not since the likes of KISS has there been a true renausaunce in branding Rock Stars. Dave Grohl has tapped into that. The multi-talented eclectic personality that has been a staple in rock history for the past 20 years is a marketing genius. His next step is to get in front of the audience of "Chelsie Lately," whoever the hell that is. Not only did Grohl sub for Chelsie Monday, he's gonna be there all week. Surely that'll give the E! TV show the Dave Grohl bump.

No new Tool

It's been over 6 years and I'm sad to report ... Sorry folks, no new Tool album in 2013. Reports indicate that front man Maynard James Keenan has stated that the band will not release a new album in 2013. He's got projects out that wazoo, Adam Jones is getting married, and we think Danny Carey has been injured riding an Italian scooter accident, though it's not confirmed so it could be bassist Justin Chancellor. Maynard told Radio Futuro in Chile that "No new disc. Not this year … I have not written any songs. So no, there is nothing." Don't get your hopes up.

Going Solo, Megadeth Mixing, New album this year?, and Another Documentary

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Going solo

Witherspoon has soul
Witherspoon has soul

We’re eagerly anticipating the release of Sevendust’s latest attempt Black Out The Sun, but there’s word that during the band’s next break front man Lejon Witherspoon will work on some solo stuff. Witherspoon says that his solo stuff will have a lot more soul to it, but people will hear his voice and immediately compare it to Sevendust. There’s no word on when Sevendust will take another break, as they haven’t even released or toured on the new album, but Witherspoon says that the music industry is like a game of chess … you’re always waiting to make that next decisive move.

Megadeth mixing

Mixing has begun for a new Megadeth album. Singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine posted an update that the band is inching closer to releasing a follow up to 2011’s Th1rt3en. Bassist Dave Ellifson posted about how the songs they’re working on sound more old school Megadeth than anything has recently. No details about when the new album will be available but we’ll keep an eye out.

New album this year?

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament is giving some updates about the band and what they have up their sleeve this year. Ament tells Rolling Stone that when the band gets together after a break they have some really good things happen, musically. Still nothing firm on when a new album might come out, but the band plans a show up in Chicago at Wrigley Field July 19th.

Another documentary

Green Day has not just one documentary out there making the festival rounds … they also have another film that focuses on the band’s theatrical production. It’s been ten years since American Idiot took to the stage on Broadway and now the documentary about how the musical formed will be featured next month at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. The film provides the story of how the play’s creative team talked Billie Joe into taking a featured role in the play. Also at South By Southwest, Green Day will feature their documentary iCuatro!.  Watch the trailer below or at this link.

Sound City Out Today, Rose May Lose, New Song, Video and Album Details and Sabbath to Begin Mixing

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Sound City

Sound City out today

The much anticipated documentary from the mind of Dave Grohl is available to the public today. Those who preordered Sound City should be getting that soon. The documentary focuses on an old analog studio where a ton of artists recorded epic albums, including Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Cheap Trick and others. Grohl says that since the film focuses on an older studio, and since his last Foo Fighters album was recorded all on old-school tapes, that the film is anti-technology. But that’s not the case. He hopes the movie will inspire people to fall in love with the human element and the human process of making music. The soundtrack will be out sometime next month.

Rose may lose

Axl Rose may lose his lawsuit against Activision. It’s reported a judge may toss the $20 million case. Rose says years ago the agreement was that Activision could use “Welcome to the Jungle” in a Guitar Hero Game only if they didn’t use any characters that looked like members of the band. Activision ended up using a Slash-type character but claims the statute of limitations has expired … so tough, Rose. Deal with it!

New song, video and album details

How to Destroy Angels, Trent Reznor’s side project with his hot ass wife Mariqueen Maandig, longtime Nine Inch Nails contributor Rob Sheridan and production partner Atticus Ross, has released another song, a creepy-ass video and details about their new album. The song is “How Long?” and the video shows some guy who seems to be feral (that means raised in the wild). He paints his face with war paint, has glowing eyes like a cat and goes and strangles some dude. The video is available online at The album Welcome To Oblivion will be out March 5th.

Sabbath to begin mixing

Speaking of new albums, word has it that Black Sabbath will begin mixing their new album this month. The band, well most of them … they excluded original drummer Bill Ward … reunited a few years ago to put together a new album. The provisional title is 13. There’s still no word on a firm release date.
